School Governorship
Bishop Challoner Catholic School
Jerry Kearns was appointed a foundation governor at Bishop Challoner secondary school in Tower Hamlets at the start of 2024. As a governor he plays a vital role in ensuring the school’s values and vision are reflected in its strategic direction and day-to-day governance. This involves active participation in full board meetings and the HR, Finance, and Premises Committee, helping to scrutinize staffing structures, monitor financial performance, and oversee the maintenance and development of school facilities. Input is crucial in approving annual budgets, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support student outcomes.
Beyond committee work, as a foundation governor Jerry is often called upon to serve on various panels, including for staff recruitment, bringing both strategic oversight and values-based judgment to the appointment of senior leaders and teaching staff. He has a seat on the remuneration panel, helping to determine fair and transparent pay structures, and on permanent exclusion panels, weighing complex decisions that balance student welfare, school discipline, and legal frameworks. Through these responsibilities, as a foundation governor, Jerry acts as both steward of the school’s mission and a critical friend to its leadership, offering challenge and support in equal measure. The role demands a blend of strategic thinking, ethical integrity, and a deep commitment to the school community.
